Bruce Dinkins arrived at Bowie in 2001 and has already added a
significant list of accomplishments to the band's accolades. They have earned
the "Sweepstakes" award from the University Interscholastic League in
concert and marching every year since he arrived. The Bowie Band was the Grand
National Champion at the Smokey Mountain Music Festival, the National
Adjudicators Invitational, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona National Band
Championship in Phoenix, and among the top
twelve bands at the Bands of America Grand Nationals competition in Indianapolis. They also
carry the elite honor of being a recipient of the coveted Sudler Shield awarded
by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
An educator for more than 30 years, Dinkins' groups have been heard at the
Southern Division Music Educators National Conference, the Southern Regional College
Band Directors Association/National Band Association conference, the Bands of
America National Concert Band Festival in Chicago and Indianapolis, and
invitational music festivals at the University of Kentucky, the University of
Florida, the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of South
Florida and the University of South Carolina. In 2000, his band performed at
the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic and he has the distinction of being the
only four time recipient of the honor band award for the National Adjudicators
Invitational Festivals.
Dinkins attended the University of Tampa, the New England Conservatory, the Juilliard School,
the Florida State
University, and the Harvard University.
Before joining the faculty at Bowie High School, he was a member of the faculties at Irmo High School
in South Carolina, North
GwinnettHigh
School, Emory University, Georgia State University in Georgia and Florida
Community CollegeJacksonville. He has performed with the
Atlanta Chamber Orchestra, the Macon Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville
Symphony and the Florida Orchestra. His orchestra conducting experience
includes Conductor/Music Director of the Memphis Youth Symphony, the South
Carolina Youth Philharmonic and twenty four years as a conductor at the
prestigious Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee where he has conducted the
Cumberland Orchestra and the Philharmonia.
He is a member of the Phi Beta Mu American Bandmasters Association, and Pi
Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.
Ryan Thomas - Assistant Director

Ryan Thomas is in his third year at Bowie and his tenth year
of teaching. Mr. Thomas teaches the
percussion ensembles, jazz ensembles, guitar, and assists with the wind
ensembles and marching band. Before
moving to Austin, Mr. Thomas lived and taught in Orlando, Florida. He was the associate director of bands at OlympiaHigh School,
director of bands at GothaMiddle School, and associate director of bands at Winter ParkHigh School,
all in the Orlando
area. Mr. Thomas was also a musician
with the Disney theme parks from 1999-2003.
Mr. Thomas earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida in music education where
he studied percussion with Bob McCormick and conducting with William
Wiedrich. He also has extensive
experience with Drum and Bugle Corps.
Mr. Thomas spent five years as a member with different corps, including
the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps and the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. He then went on to teach with the Colts for
seven years, holding positions including technician, percussion caption head,
percussion arranger, and staff coordinator.
Mr. Thomas has brought his marching expertise to Bowie to
help them reach new heights of achievement and artistry in the marching
arena. Mr. Thomas provides all of the
percussion arrangements for the Outdoor Performing Ensemble, as well as helping
in the design process of the show with the other members of the staff. The concert percussion ensemble is growing
through working with major national level clinicians such as Lynn Glassock and
Tom Burrit. This year the percussion ensembles
all received Division I ratings at both the region and state level UIL Solo and
Ensemble contests. Mr. Thomas is
thrilled to be at Bowie and is ready for another great year.
Kim Shuttlesworth - Assistant Director

Kim Shuttlesworth has
been teaching music education in the AustinIndependentSchool
District for four years.She is beginning her third year with BowieHigh
School.She is the director of the Wind Ensemble II and Steel Drum Program and
assist with the marching band.She was
previously the assistant director at ClintSmallMiddle
School in 2006.Ms. Shuttlesworth has also taught privately in the AustinIndependentSchool
District and LockhartIndependentSchool
District.
While at Bowie, her ensembles have received superior
ratings at UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest and Texas State Solo &
Ensemble Contest.The Bowie Steel Drum
Band has performed all around the Austin
area including Sunset Valley Arts Festival, Inside Out Steel Drum Community
Concerts, Capital 10K, for the Governor and multiple Austin ISD
ceremonies.
Ms. Shuttlesworth
graduated from CarthageHigh School in 2001.She earned her Bachelor’s degree from The
University of Texas at Austin
in Musical Studies where she studied trumpet with Ray Sasaki and conducting
with Dr. Robert Carnochan and Prof. Glenn Richter. While at The University, Ms.
Shuttlesworth was involved with various organizations including Longhorn Band,
in which she served as Drum Major during the 2005-2006 National Championship
Season.
Ms. Shuttlesworth has
worked with summer programs over the past eight years including Longhorn Music
Camp and the Sewanee Summer Music Festival.This past summer she was the musical director for the Austin Independent
School District All City Musical.
Ms. Shuttlesworth holds
professional affiliations with the Texas Music Educators Association and Tau
Beta Sigma.
Stephen A. Howard - Assistant Director - Color Guard

Stephen A. Howard comes to James Bowie High School from Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Howard holds a Bachelor's of Music degree from Radford University in Radford, Virginia where he concentrated in both Instrumental and Vocal Music Education. At Radford, he studied trombone with Dr. Joseph Blaha and Dr. Steven Rice, percussion with Prof. Al Wojtera, voice with Prof. Elizabeth Curtis, and conducting with composer/conductor Prof. Mark D. Camphouse.
After graduating, Mr. Howard was appointed as the Director of Bands at Brookland Middle School in Richmond, Virginia. Under his direction, Brookland received a rating of "Superior" from the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director's Association at the annual District Band Festival.
Mr. Howard also holds a Master's of Music degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, concentrating in Instrumental Conducting. There, he studied conducting with Prof. Anthony Maiello and Prof. Mark D. Camphouse.
Mr. Howard has been involved in the marching arts since high school and has performed with many groups since then, including Insignia Winter Guard, Innovation Winter Guard, Apex Winter Guard, and the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps.
Mr. Howard is a member of the National Band Association, Phi Kappa Phi National Education Fraternity, and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.
