Open to all Bowie High School students. In the fall, this group is the “visual interpretation” of the marching band.  The winter guard program provides performance opportunities for its members through participation in the Texas Winter Guard Circuit and Winter Guard International.

Color guard students will learn performance technique, movement basics, and equipment basics on flag, rifle, and sabré, performance observation and analysis, basic design, and choreography. All instruction will be given at an appropriately challenging level based on the student’s own level of ability.

1. Color guard students will work on basic movement and equipment skills through fundamental studies and working on repertoire for marching and winter guard shows.

2. Color guard students will learn basic aspects of performance observation and analysis.

3. Color guard students will survey a variety of visual art forms, shape, color, and movement.

4. Color guard students will design and choreograph their own production at least once during the school year. (Solo and Ensemble)

Attendance and participation during class rehearsal time is of the utmost importance and will make up the majority of your grade. Being prepared for daily rehearsals is a part of the attendance and participation grade (practicing your objectives outside of class time, etc.). There will also be class work, homework, projects, and assessments (quizzes and tests) that make up a part of your grade. These assessments will vary between choreography performance tests and written tests. Performances are absolutely mandatory. Missing a performance will result in an alternative assignment. This assignment will have a one-week deadline, from the date of missed performance.
All students must maintain eligibility of passing grades in order to participate according to the UIL rules! See the Bands of Bowie Handbook in the Handouts section of Charms for additional information.

The Color guard is the visual element that performs as an integral part of the Bowie Outdoor Performing Ensemble and as an independent performance group. The members of the color guard also perform during the Winter Guard season, which is January through April.

Members of the Winter Guard may be assessed a separate Winter Guard Fair Share. The amount of the Fair Share will be set annually by the Director and is at the discretion of the Director. Members will be notified of the Fair Share amount and date due at the earliest possible time.
